Although the CEMet study points out the difficulty of determining a factor or series of factors that are decisive for an investor to decide to do so in the country, it considers that Montevideo has certain characteristics that could make it the epicenter of development focused on sectors such as of information technology, life sciences and creative industries.
“Montevideo has a great opportunity to promote itself as a talent destination through a strong value proposition of its quality of life”, points out the study, and adds that “in this way, it will not only be able to retain the young talent of the country so demanded by companies, but also enhance its condition of attracting skilled immigration“.
Uruguay: a country with opportunities
According to the joint study by CEMet with the IDB, “the sectors of Knowledge Intensive Goods and Services —defined as those with high components of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in their ideation and production processes – prove to be the ones with the highest levels of productivity”
In 2021, the export of these sectors accounted for 79% of the country’s service exports, and 11% of total exports. Therefore, the numbers support the structural conditions and opportunities for “employment generation, productivity improvement and the shifting of the innovation frontier through the development of this sector”, as the research indicates.
In this line, the global services and, within these, the ICT industries still show room for development, being able to take advantage of the current context to attract the regional headquarters of corporations to the country. Something that is currently beginning to happen, but can still grow significantly.
