Wels expects 800,000 visitors at the Christmas world

Wels expects 800,000 visitors at the Christmas world

The aim is to reach the pre-corona numbers again. “We want to exceed the bar of 800,000 visitors in 2019,” says Mayor Andreas Rabl (FP). Harmonious Christmas lighting is essential for the Christmas market, and those responsible leave no doubt about that.

In view of the energy crisis, however, the lighting times are somewhat restricted and no heating pads are used. By doing without the radiant heaters alone, around 17,000 kilowatt hours of electricity would be saved. Of course, the city cannot dictate that restaurateurs do without heaters for their guests. In any case, landlord Jörg Wanik will use warming fire barrels instead of gas mushrooms at the atmospheric Gösser beer garden advent.

70 kilometers of LED light chains

According to Rabl, the fact that the city has invested heavily in energy-saving LED lighting in recent years has paid off. 700,000 points of light, more than 70 kilometers of fairy lights and more than 100,000 crystals on the lanterns make the city center shine at Christmas time. The Wels Lights Path, which was presented for the first time last year, will be expanded this year by two light sculptures. A new feature is a 6.5-metre-tall deer that will stand by the Ledererturm and was financed by the tourism association, and a photo spot with the Wels logo in the pedestrian zone. Tourism chairman Helmut Platzer emphasizes that the new 1.7 kilometer long light path attracted many visitors to Wels last year. “We didn’t want to be left behind, especially since many companies have already invested in the light trail,” says the head of tourism.

Stimulus for the Advent business

Economic City Councilor Martin Oberndorfer (VP) emphasizes the economic importance of the Christmas world for retail and gastronomy. “Visitors leave a lot of purchasing power here, it’s an important economic factor for the city.” City marketing boss Peter Jungreithmair adds that around 100 million euros in total sales are generated in Wels during the Advent season.

The Christmas world in Wels starts in two weeks on Friday, November 18th and is open until December 24th. The path of lights shines again until Candlemas on February 2nd.

The market stalls are already fully booked, there were enough interested parties who will present a colorful variety of gift ideas and take care of the physical well-being of the visitors.

Due to the redesign of Pollheimerpark, some exhibitors are moving to Minoritenplatz. There the children’s carousel and the chain carousel are set up, the children’s train runs on the town square.

Of course, the Heavenly Cloud Kingdom of the Christ Child in the Ledererturm is also open again (Thursdays to Sundays). There the children can give their wish list to Santa Claus. Every letter will be answered.

And at the Christmas in the mountains on the town square, many choirs, brass bands and music groups perform. Special dates to note are December 10th, when the Rauris gold miners are visiting, and the Perchten and Krampus run on December 8th.
