They have been a “permanent issue” in the Ried Regional Court for several years: jury trials for re-activation, primarily against young adults, for sending National Socialist content on social networks such as Facebook or WhatsApp.

Even after hundreds of such court hearings in Austria in recent years, word has apparently still not gotten around that sending such content can have serious legal consequences. Recently, a young man from the Braunau district had to take a seat in the dock in the jury courtroom in Ried. The Ried public prosecutor charged the accused with several acts under the Prohibition Act between March 4, 2021 and June 20, 2021.

The accused sent two pictures and two videos with Nazi content via the WhatsApp news service. One of the photos included a swastika. On another the saying “the bigger the Jew, the warmer the booth”. The accused confessed remorsefully. It was very stupid and he found it funny at that moment. The jury agreed and unanimously found the young Innviertler guilty on all four counts.

The presiding judge of the jury, Stefan Kiesl, sentenced the man to six months in prison. The judgment is already final.
