The ATSS promotes a plebiscite to reform social security in Uruguay

The text, which seeks to make it impossible by constitutional means for a government in power to change the rules for retirees, will be released after the vote on the reform promoted by the government. Meanwhile, they advance with reservation, as stated by the president of the association, Karina Sosado not rule out a mobilization plan in the streets.

If the reform is approved, the ATSS will seek to convince 10% of the electorate to be able to enable the popular consultation. However, so far they do not have official support or the union central PIT-CNT, which could call for a partial general strike in rejection of the changes to Social Security; nor of Broad Front (FA)who stated that the ATSS initiative is hasty.

The position of the Broad Front

Although the FA officially communicated its rejection of the Social Security reform promoted by the government coalition led by Lacalle Pou, it also assured its participation in its parliamentary treatment. In turn, he decided to continue discussing the Executive Branch’s proposal until November 26, when the party’s National Plenary will take place.

The decision was made in view of maintain a responsible attitude as opposition, while looking for alternatives discussed with people. For this reason, no representative of the left officially took the flag of the plebiscite that would oppose a law that has not yet been approved, although they reject similar points of the reform.

For its part, the directive Socialist Party (PS) understands that the coalition should not vote on any point or make contributions in the parliamentary commission, but present its own and exclusive alternative, outside the ruling party, but also from the ATSS.
