New Year’s Eve celebration on Linz’s main square canceled weeks ago

As announced today, this year for the third time in a row there will be no official New Year’s Eve celebrations on Linz’s main square. The reason is – contrary to what is communicated in some media – not the Halloween riots. “Just because chaotic people announce that they are going to make a riot, we don’t let ourselves be brought to our knees,” says Mayor Klaus Luger (SP) to the OÖN. The city already has plans decided against the event a few weeks ago. The cancellation is rather due to the change in leisure time since the Corona crisis. Many people would avoid big events, which is why the organizers decided weeks ago not to organize a party.

With regard to the Halloween riots, Luger Linz defended: There had also been riots in Vienna and Salzburg. However, these were less massive.

Overall, the work for the police is also becoming increasingly difficult. The organization of such events has changed completely and is increasingly taking place via small groups or even individuals, according to Luger. It is therefore necessary for the police to do more research on internet platforms in the future.
