Chats with Schmid: No charges, but a bad image for “Presse” publishers

For Rainer Nowak, publisher and editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper “Die Presse”, a sideline surrounding the chat affair involving former ÖBAG CEO Thomas Schmid has no legal repercussions.

After an anonymous complaint from 2020, the WKStA created a 166-page report. In the ad, Nowak is accused of intervening with Sebastian Kurz and Gernot Blümel for jobs for his partner, Austro Control Managing Director Valerie Hackl.

According to the ad, Nowak is said to have linked this to reporting on the government. Nowak lawyer Johannes Zink said that an initial suspicion had been examined. However, the WKStA recommended that the higher authorities put the notification back. Nowak was “glad that the WKStA checked so carefully”, even if this check “sometimes brought embarrassing and stupid chats to the public”. However, according to Nowak, he “never had a deal with the later boss of ÖBAG”. Yesterday, Nowak apologized to the readers and the editors on the “Presse” website for the tonality and inappropriate closeness in the chats.

In the WKStA report, Nowak’s ambitions to become ORF Director General are also evident. At the end of January 2017, Schmid wrote to Nowak: “I’d rather make money than manage it.” – “Me too!!!”, answers Nowak. “Although ORF boss is fine.” On March 26, 2019, Nowak asked Schmid how his hearing for the position of sole director of the federal investment holding company ÖBAG had gone. “Super” and “really good”, answers Schmid, “happy” – which Nowak “very happy!!” Schmid then: “Now you’re still ORF boss”https://www.nachrichten.at/”Dude – but then it’s off”https://www.nachrichten.at/”Thanks for everything”. Nowak: “A matter of honor. Now you have to help me with the ORF.” Schmid: “Absolutely.”
