Although LASK trainer Didi Kühbauer returns to the Allianz Stadium as an opponent on Sunday for the first time after his dismissal at Rapid Vienna in November 2021, there is only one topic for Austria’s record champions: the upcoming presidential election on November 26th.
The green-whites have turbulent weeks behind them: after the announced resignations of still boss Martin Bruckner and the economic director Christoph Peschek, there were weeks of power struggles. In the meantime, at least one thing is certain: in the upcoming Hütteldorfer presidential election, only one list will compete – that of the former ORF general director Alexander Wrabetz.
The plans of what is now the only list will be presented to the public this Friday. The biggest request, however, is already ready to be announced: the flagship combat team should be brought back on the road to success, equipped with more resources. “The most important thing is that we urgently position ourselves as well as possible in the sports area of the combat team and take quick steps to calm things down here,” says Wrabetz. Specifically, a total budget of around 40 million euros is to be increased in steps to 60 million euros – for the benefit of the first team.
The 62-year-old Wrabetz, who was ORF boss for 15 years, wants to play to his strengths. “I can contribute that I can manage large companies and complex structures well, because a result also comes out and I can also represent it to stakeholders and partners. But I will not work as a senior coach or senior sports director.”
On Sunday, there is also a lot at stake for the Viennese in sport: Rapid is currently seventh and not in the championship group – with an away win, the Linz team could extend the lead over their eternal rivals to eleven points.
