South Korea prepares vigils for victims of Halloween tragedy

The South Korean authorities acknowledged that there was not enough planning to guarantee the safety from such a crowd and the opposition accuses the government of President Yoon Suk-yeol of not taking responsibility for the disaster.

In a sign of this anger, a woman, identified by local media as the mother of one of the victims, destroyed the wreath laid by the president and mayor of Seoul on Friday at the memorial erected after the tragedy.

“What is the point of these flowers if they cannot protect (our children)? Think about it,” said the woman in the images broadcast on local television.

“What’s the point of being around this (the funeral wreaths) when you let our children die?” she added, before police pulled her away from the memorial, located at Seoul City Hall.

Both President Yoon and other high-ranking officials, such as the national police chief and the interior minister, apologized.

The territory decreed national mourning until this saturdayduring which the flags flown at half-staff and the entertainment events were cancelled.

Public scrutiny over how the crowd was managed is intensifying and a wide-ranging investigation to establish the exact cause of the tragedy.

In the absence of an organizer for the party, the government did not ask bars, clubs and restaurants, some located in narrow alleys in Itaewon, to submit a security plan.

And while police estimated turnout at 100,000 in advance, they only deployed 137 officers, while having another 6,500 mobilized elsewhere in Seoul for a much less crowded anti-government protest.
