They were prevented from doing so by the police, the Interior Ministry said. Meanwhile, right-wing extremists demonstrated in the afternoon against the “flood of asylum seekers” and “price increases”. FPÖ General Secretary Michael Schnedlitz also spoke at a rally beforehand.
“Lock up politicians – close borders”
At around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, representatives of the Identitarians tried to use a ladder to reach the balcony above the entrance to the Ministry of the Interior from the street and put up a banner with the text “Lock up politicians – close the borders”. However, this could be prevented by an intervention by the property security officers of the Vienna State Police. The identities of the activists were established and the banner was withdrawn.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) assured that one would not be influenced by right-wing extremists and right-wing radicals, their slogans and hatred. His goal is the fight “against the brutal, inhuman trafficking mafia”. Their goal is to divide society “in order to pursue their anti-democratic goals”.
Right wing rally downtown
Despite this, demonstrators, some of whom were far-right, gathered in downtown Vienna in the afternoon for a rally at which a representative of the identitarian group “Die Österreicher” and Corona demo organizer Martin Rutter appeared. With Schnedlitz, a prominent liberal also took the floor. He would much rather speak here after a Martin Rutter, for example, than in Parliament in front of a Sigrid Maurer or someone else, he said, for example.
At the subsequent demonstration, Russian flags could be seen in addition to Austrian flags. Banners advertised all sorts of things, such as a tax cut. Larger incidents were not reported for the time being, the Vienna police said on request.

In Linz, too, a right-wing action caused a stir at the weekend. As a reaction to the Halloween riots in downtown Linz, activists put up a banner on the portal of the Römerberg tunnel with the words “Linz is not Athena – push her away”.
