The 19-year-old Dane defeated Novak Djokovic 3: 6, 6: 3, 7: 5 in the final on Sunday and celebrated his third title on the ATP tour. This means that on Monday he will be in the top ten in the world rankings for the first time. Final opponent Djokovic, on the other hand, left the field as a loser after 13 wins in a row and missed his seventh Paris Masters title.
Rune not only overcame a set deficit in the final, the teenager also made up for a 1:3 in the decisive third round. When the Dane served to win the match at a score of 6: 5, he also had to fend off six breakballs from the Serb. In return, the 19-year-old used his second match point for the greatest success of his young career so far.
Rune, who was in the final four times in a row on the ATP tour and has now clinched his first Masters triumph, will move up to tenth place in the ranking according to ATP. No Dane has ever done that before him.
It was also the fifth win over a top ten player in five days for the highly talented tennis player. Before the final success against Djokovic, Rune had already put Hubert Hurkacz (POL/10th), Andrej Rublew (RUS/7th), the ailing Carlos Alcaraz (ESP/1st) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (CAN/8th) in their place assigned.
