EU plans billions in aid package for Kyiv

The EU Commission explained that she wants to present the package, which is to be divided into monthly tranches of 1.5 billion euros each, in Brussels next week.

The advantageous loans should make a “significant contribution” to Kiev’s financial needs for 2023. The funds would also support Ukraine to implement further reforms on the way towards EU membership, it said.

Selenskyj only explained on Twitter that he had spoken to von der Leyen about financial support for the current and coming year. Another topic was the importance of grain deliveries from Ukraine via the Black Sea to support global food security.

Expectations of rapid EU accession subdued

The EU Commission, meanwhile, dampened expectations of Ukraine’s official accession candidate for early admission to the international community. “In view of the extensive work required to prepare for participation in the EU internal market and in many other important policy areas, the entire preparations for accession will most likely take longer than a year or two,” EU Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi told the “Welt”.

According to the newspaper, Ukrainian Europe Minister Olha Stefanischyna, on the other hand, is pushing for an accelerated procedure. “Our neighboring countries and the Baltics, countries that are among our biggest supporters, have already signaled that quick accession is possible,” Stefanischyna is quoted as saying.

Ukraine was only granted EU candidate country status in June, along with neighboring Moldova. Many governments and citizens are skeptical about the admission of further states to the European Union. The rapprochement talks with the states of the Western Balkans have been extremely sluggish for years.
