Police stopped 84-year-old wrong-way driver on the A9

The police officers saw the 84-year-old around 11:05 a.m. when he was driving down the Gratwein Süd exit ramp (Graz-Surroundings district) and followed him with blue lights and a follow-up horn, the Styrian state police said. The car was overtaken and its way onto the freeway was cut off. The driver even wanted to bypass this blockade, and the police officers were only able to stop him with loud shouts and hand signals.

By intervening, a potentially serious accident on the very busy section of the A9 could be prevented, according to the police. Already on the exit ramp, an oncoming car had to brake hard and avoid the wrong-way driver. An alcohol pre-test on the handlebars was negative. It was said that his driver’s license was taken away from him because of his “physical and mental condition”.
