The “My social shopping basket” project has been an important supporter of the social markets in the Vöcklabruck district for ten years. “We get ten percent of our entire inventory via the social shopping basket,” emphasizes Gabriele Brandstetter, head of the Vöcklabruck social market “Der Korb”, the importance of this project. Especially in the current time, functioning social markets are an immensely important factor in the social landscape, Brandstetter and her team are convinced.

“I think it’s nice that we can make a contribution with the social shopping basket, and I would like to thank the local suppliers and the people who are involved in this meaningful project,” says Hermann Krenn, the initiator of the project and chairman of Volkshilfe Voecklabruck. In addition, with this project, “fresh goods” are handed over to the social markets, which then keep for a correspondingly long time.

“My social shopping basket”, which was created with the participation of local SPÖ organizations in the district of Vöcklabruck, works very simply: customers can buy groceries when shopping in shops of the participating local suppliers, which they then store in the “social shopping basket”. This is located in the shop near the cash desk. You can make a big difference with a small amount.

The goods are picked up from the social markets in the district and offered for sale at a reasonable price for people with low incomes. This makes food affordable. These people should be able to shop according to their financial means and not be dependent on handouts. Shopping in the social markets is bound by certain rules, starting with an authorization card through to the quantity regulation per purchase and the number of possible purchases per week.

Hermann Krenn is pleased that people are still willing to donate the goods and refers to 50 tons of food that the project has already made available to the social markets. “After all, we’re talking about 100,000 euros worth of goods,” says Krenn. He appeals to state politicians to support the social markets in the current time. “Because if our society breaks away from this important aid project, we’ll have a real problem.”
