Pensioner killed: murder trial without murder weapon and motive

The man is said to have killed an 81-year-old pensioner in her apartment in the summer of 2020 with a total of 28 stab wounds. The accused is massively incriminated by DNA traces at the crime scene. He himself says he is innocent. The single former bank clerk was found dead in her apartment in Salzburg on August 30, 2020. The body was wrapped in a sheet of cloth eight meters long. The victim was considered a cautious and suspicious person and lived a very withdrawn life.

DNA tests arranged in the block of flats

After the crime, the police found numerous DNA traces. The data was compared with databases – initially without success. The public prosecutor’s office then resorted to a rare measure: They applied to the court for a DNA series examination, which was finally carried out on all 37 single men from the block of flats – including the accused. The 62-year-old is blameless and denies any connection with the crime. He was never in the woman’s apartment and had no contact with the victim. He only held the front door open for her once. “He voluntarily took part in the DNA test. Which perpetrator would do that?” asked defense attorney Andreas Schöppl in the process. Also, there is no motive.

“I’m innocent. I have nothing to do with the murder,” said the accused. He has never hurt anyone in his life, let alone killed anyone. “Someone else must have planted my DNA.”

A knife was believed to be the murder weapon, but the weapon could not be found. According to a psychiatric report, the accused is of sound mind and has not shown any signs of a mental disorder. Three days of negotiations are scheduled for the process. A verdict is expected on Friday.
