Republicans won fewer votes than expected

In Alabama, Republican Katie Britt has beaten Democrat Will Boyd, thus becoming the first woman to elect this state to the Upper House. In addition, Senator Marco Rubio has won re-election for the State of Florida, obtaining a third term.

In Oklahoma -the only state for which two senators were elected instead of one- Republicans James Lankford -in office since 2015- and Markwayne Mullin, who represented the aforementioned State in the House of Representatives, have been re-elected. , and who happens to be the first Native American senator from Oklahoma in a century.

Meanwhile, in Vermont, Democrat Peter Welch — who has held the position of representative in the Lower House since 2007 — will replace Patrick Leahy, who is retiring from office after almost 50 years as a legislator.

Despite poll estimates that there would be a large “punishment” vote against Joe Biden and his economic policies, there was no wave of Republican votes and everything indicates that they will regain the majority of the House of Representatives but with a minimal difference.

The Democrats will lose seats, but less than in other midterm elections when they were in government, as happened during the administration of Barack Obama in which 63 seats resigned. What is clear so far is that inflation seems to have had no impact on voter behavior.

With Republican domination of the House of Representatives, regardless of what happens in the Senate, there will be a divided government for the next two years with which neither of the two parties will be able to impose their agenda.
