Ex-Wirecard boss soon in court

Two and a half years after the spectacular bankruptcy of the German payment service provider Wirecard, the former CEO is Austrian Markus Brown, soon in court. The trial before the Munich district court will start on December 8th. The process is likely to last until 2024. Six days of negotiations are scheduled for this year, and another 94 have been scheduled for 2023.

In September, the lawsuit against the 53-year-old, who has been in custody since 2020, and two other ex-managers was approved. The prosecutors accuse Braun, his chief accountant Stephan von Erffa and the governor of Wirecard in Dubai, Oliver Bellenhaus, in the indictment of accounting fraud, market manipulation, breach of trust in several cases and commercial gang fraud.

The prosecutors see Braun as one of the main culprits for a year-long balance sheet fraud that led to billions in bankruptcy: There was not a billion sum, allegedly in a trust account in Singapore. Until the insolvency, Wirecard was listed in the leading index DAX. Braun sees himself as a victim of a gang that has embezzled millions behind his back – probably an allusion to ex-CEO Jan Marsalek. This had settled shortly before bankruptcy and is wanted by international arrest warrant.
