The civil war has fragmented Syria and caused the collapse of its economywith a 90% of the population below the poverty line and a record of 9.3 million Syrian children in need of humanitarian aidaccording to the United Nations (UN).
The situation appears to be even more precarious in areas outside Damascus’ control.

Syria registers a severe degree of malnutrition
The Al-Yarubiyah access point, on the border with Iraq, through which UN aid used to pass in the northeast, was closed in 2020 under pressure from Russia, a country allied with the Bashar al-Assad regime, limiting the access to public assistance.
Since then, the delivery of aid to these areas controlled by the semi-autonomous Kurdish administration requires the approval of Damascus.
“While the average salary per family has not increased, food prices have risen 800% between 2019 and 2021 and continue to rise in 2022,” the NGO noted.

Save The Children called on donors to “redouble their efforts to tackle the food crisis and mitigate its devastating effects on children.”
He also urged the leaders gathered in Egypt for COP27 that they recognize that the climate change“like the drought in northern Syria”, is affecting “children around the world”.
