A priceless dirndl

Grandma would have liked that!” says Maximilian Gössl, who is the third generation to run the Gössl family business. It was founded 75 years ago by his grandmother Grete, a German-Polish who only brought a few sewing machines with her from the turmoil of war and that was it laid the foundation for the Salzburg traditional costume brand. The anniversary is being celebrated with a special piece of clothing – a haute couture dirndl. The masterpiece, which adorns more than 1.5 million cross-stitches, was presented in the presidential suite of the Viennese luxury hotel Kempinski, namely by the acrobat Lili Roncalli.

The design for the dirndl came from the Linz fashion designer Emanuel Burger, who worked on it for many weeks and also had a completely free hand in terms of costs. “It’s a dream for every designer,” he says. “In this way we were also able to incorporate old and complex handicraft techniques.”

A unique masterpiece

The couture dirndl is made of peasant linen, 18 meters of metal were used in the three circular skirts, as Burger explains. The embroidered rose pattern is a symbol of love and life. A special detail: “The silk blouse with its wide, transparent sleeves is an extension of the headscarf, which can be pulled flatteringly over the hair.”

The dirndl is unique and not for sale – and the start of a series. From now on there will be one couture dress per collection – as a future museum piece. But each one is also sewn in a reduced – and wearable – form. The price of the current model, which will be in stores from April, is 2450 euros. The next dresses will also be designed by Emanuel Burger, who would like a special start for his “first time”: “You can’t buy the dirndl, but you can rent it. I could imagine that it would go wonderfully with the opera ball.”
