Disappointed ‘The Crown’ fans – Is the new season really that bad?

Netflix has been staging the life of the British royals in “The Crown” since 2016. The fifth season of the award-winning series was eagerly awaited – and not just because with the death of Queen Elizabeth II at the beginning of September, the worldwide attention of monarchists had returned to Great Britain.

But a few days after the start of the season, the reactions of the viewers are cautious. The new cast in particular is met with displeasure on social networks. “Terrible! Actor selection subtly wrong. Tension was much better in previous seasons,” wrote a Twitter user. “Well, I don’t think the main actors were well chosen. I liked them much better in the previous seasons,” is another comment.

In the new season, the Netflix series comes up with new main actors: The British Imelda Staunton (66, “Harry Potter”) takes on the role of the Queen, in previous seasons Claire Foy and Olivia Colman had played the monarch. Jonathan Pryce (75, “James Bond”) gives her husband Prince Philip.

“Prince Charles doesn’t work”

Prince Charles and Lady Diana are portrayed by Dominic West (53) and Elizabeth Debicki (32). The Australian Debicki is taking over from Emma Corrin, who played the younger Lady Di in the previous season. While her performance is consistently praised, the audience does not leave the “new” Charles a good hair: “Completely wrong”, “does not work at all” and “unfortunately disappointing” is the new cast of the Prince of Wales by Dominic West. The actor is “far too handsome” and “too old” to play Charles. “Every time he is shown, I briefly think about who that is. He doesn’t look right at all, nor does his attitude,” wrote a series fan on Facebook.

The viewers also have to get used to the new Queen. Actress Imelda Staunton is known to many only as magic teacher Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter films. “How do you make Dolores Umbridge play the queen?” some ask jokingly.

The hit series, which deals with the reign of the Queen, has now reached the 1990s. Charles and Diana’s marriage is in tatters, with the royal family trying to keep it under wraps at all costs. Diana’s suffering, her escape from the golden cage, is the focus of the new season. But the Queen is also under pressure in other ways, as the popularity of the monarchy has reached a low point.
