Stampede in Seoul: Police officer found dead after investigation

The man’s body was found in his home on Friday, a South Korean police official said. According to the Yonhap news agency, the man was accused of ordering the destruction of an internal report that had warned of a serious accident on Halloween.

The 55-year-old worked at the police station responsible for the Itaewon nightlife district where the stampede happened. The guard is the focus of the investigations into the reasons for the tragic accident, only recently it was searched by the investigators.

156 people died in the stampede on October 29. That evening, around 100,000 mostly young people crowded the narrow streets of Itaewon for Halloween celebrations without police intervention. It later turned out that only 137 police officers were on duty – and that emergency calls had been received by the police hours before the disaster.
