we are in a third world war

“Peace is possible, let’s not resign ourselves to war,” he insisted, and invited “to always remain close to our brothers and sisters in the tormented Ukraine.” This new world war, according to Jorge Bergoglio, is not limited to armed conflicts, but to policies that favor poverty and hunger.

In that sense, he called “not to be enchanted by the sirens of populism (from the right, which prevails in central and eastern Europe, NDR), which exploits the needs of the people, proposing solutions that are too easy and hasty”.

“Let’s not follow the false ‘messiahs’ who, in the name of profit, proclaim recipes that only serve to increase the wealth of a few, condemning the poor to marginalization,” he stressed at the mass in Saint Peter’s Basilica, in occasion of the World Day of the Poor.

“Even today – he pointed out – we live in wounded societies and we are witnesses, as the Gospel tells us, of scenes of violence. It is enough to think of the cruelty that the Ukrainian people are suffering, of injustice and persecution; in addition, we must face the crisis generated by climate change and the pandemic, which has left a trail of ills not only physical, but also psychological, economic and social”.

He then said that “toEven today we see peoples rise up against peoples and we witness with anguish the vehement expansion of conflicts, the calamity of war, which causes the death of many innocent people and multiplies the poison of hatred”.

“Even today, much more than yesterday, many brothers and sisters, tried and discouraged, migrate in search of hope, and many people live in precariousness due to lack of employment or unfair and unworthy working conditions,” added Francisco.

“And even today – he added – the poor are the most punished victims of every crisis. But, if our hearts are drowned and indifferent, we are incapable of hearing their weak cry of pain, of crying with them and for them, of seeing how much loneliness and anguish hide even in the forgotten corners of our cities”.
