Around 55 percent voted for the wind farm in Trieben in Upper Styria

Around 2,700 residents were entitled to vote, of which around half (1,344) went to the polls. 737 voted yes, 601 people spoke out against the construction of the six wind turbines on the Herrenwald ridge north of the city. The result is binding, emphasized Mayor Helmut Schöttl (SPÖ).

The question put to the residents was: “Should the municipal council of Trieben make a change to the local development concept and the zoning plan for the construction of the Herrenwaldrücken wind farm?” In June, at a meeting of the municipal council, it was decided unanimously to involve the population in the decision on the energy project.

In the run-up to the event, there were both supporters and opponents. Some hope for cheap electricity, others fear for the hiking area. The wind farm’s six turbines could generate up to 60 GWh of electricity, which corresponds to the average annual consumption of up to 20,000 households. Brandpower carried out wind measurements and found the Herrenwald ridge to be unanimous.
