On the day before the so-called Reichspogromnacht, the Welser Antifa invited to the traditional commemoration. The beginning of the systematic persecution of the Jews 84 years ago gives cause for mourning and remembrance every year. More than 200 participants gathered in front of the Jewish monument in Pollheimerpark to listen to the memorial speech by Ukrainian-Austrian writer Vladimir Vertlib. As in the 1930s, the same applies today: “Being apolitical does not necessarily mean that you are not interested in politics. It rather means not wanting to think and not seeing the obvious.”
Antifa chairman Werner Retzl emphasized that a joint commemoration, as recently put forward by the OÖ Nachrichten, is only conceivable with democratic forces that do not stir up feelings against fringe groups in everyday behavior. The Welser SP invoked the power of joint efforts for democracy and the rule of law.
