Hedgehogs often use a pile or dry moss as their winter quarters. The natural history station of the city of Linz is helping the hedgehogs this year with 24 hedgehog houses that are being set up throughout the city. Next winter there will probably be as many again. But private individuals with a garden can also support the hedgehogs. “If private individuals want to offer the hedgehogs a winter quarters, many a pile of leaves in the garden also serve as a retreat for the animals, or you can build a wooden house yourself,” says City Councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens).
Gardens close to nature help hedgehogs
Gardens should be kept as natural as possible during the cold season, because here hedgehogs find the best conditions to eat up enough winter fat in the form of beetles, earthworms, snails and spiders. Usually hedgehogs sleep from November to March. Depending on the weather, hibernation can begin as early as October or last until April.
