His new work “The Extension” was also well received by critics and the public. In this novel, Menasse tells the fate of two “blood brothers” – Mateusz and Adam – who went their separate ways after the Polish uprising against the communist regime. Mateusz rises to the highest office and becomes Prime Minister of Poland. Adam, on the other hand, made a career in the European Commission in Brussels after Poland joined the EU. However, when their paths cross in negotiations over Albania’s accession to the EU, this long-standing friendship turns into unrelenting hostility. The political conflict between the two blood brothers is only the framework within which a multitude of fates are decided.
As part of the Freistadt Literature Days, Menasse will be reading from “The Extension” tomorrow, Friday (8 p.m.), in the Salzhof. The reading is organized by the Local Bühne Freistadt in cooperation with the “Literaturschiff” association.
