In the past few days, many motorists who have been driving on the Welser Westspange have wondered why there was a speed limit of 60 km/h in both the Noitzmühle and Steinhaus tunnels, but no obvious construction work could be seen. Some also linked this to the November 7th network outage.
“That has nothing to do with it,” says Klaus Mühllehner, who is responsible for Asfinag. It is normal, technical maintenance work that is necessary twice a year in summer and autumn and would only coincidentally coincide with the network failure.
Electrics and technology would be checked and that is why there is a speed limit, which is scheduled to last until Thursday, says Mühllehner. “The fire alarm in the event of an accident is also checked,” says the regional manager for the Asfinag systems. In contrast to summer, when the tunnels are also cleaned, the work in autumn is shorter.
