Justice ordered a repeat of the 2021 Berlin elections due to a wave of irregularities

To justify their decision, very unusual in recent German history, those responsible for the court invoked “the frequency and seriousness of voting errors”, due, according to them, to “systematic failures in the preparation of the elections”.

Some new elections, with the same candidates, have to be prepared in the next 90 days, probably on February 12.

The city is currently run by former minister Franziska Giffey (SPD), at the head of a coalition formed with environmentalists and the extreme left of Die Linke.

Context

On September 26, 20221, the Berlin voters were called to the polls to elect the deputies of the German Parliament (Bundestag), the members of the House of Representatives and the assemblies of the 12 districts of the city.

That day, the Social Democrats, led by Giffey, won 21.4% of the vote in Berlin, ahead of the Greens (18.9%) and the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) (18.1%). .

Parallel to these municipal elections, 57% of
Berliners spoke out in favor of an electoral initiative
ral to expropriate the large
hundreds of thousands of vacant homes, and that a new housing company
da pública manage the rentals.

The initiative called on Berliners to vote on whether large real estate companies, which own thousands of homes, should be expropriated or dispossessed.

Some of its homes would be placed under public management, which would affect some 240 units, that is, around 15% of Berlin’s rental housing stock.

However, that Sunday in September, the German capital was partially paralyzed by the Berlin Marathon, in which tens of thousands of people usually participate.

Many voters complained that they were unable to vote because of these disturbances or that they had to wait for hours.

The different ballots were also disturbed by the presence of erroneous or insufficient ballots, and by the small number of ballot boxes.
