A 59-year-old employee of the local construction company observed on Tuesday how two men were using a tractor with a trailer and a loading crane to load the iron mats on the construction site. He considered the two men to be employees and therefore did not assume theft.
The crime was reported to the police in Obernberg on Wednesday. This was finally able to investigate a 36-year-old employee of the company from Ottnang am Hausruck as the perpetrator. The 59-year-old witness was able to clearly identify the man from a photograph as the one who loaded the rebar onto the tractor trailer.
The 36-year-old initially denied the crime, but eventually admitted to having stolen the iron mats. The second man, the driver of the tractor, may not have known anything about the theft – he may have assumed that the perpetrator had legally acquired the bars.
The suspect told the police that he wanted to bring the bars back and make up for the damage.
