More than 115,000 digital driver’s licenses in the first month

The digital driving licenses have been scanned around 4,600 times by the police so far. This was announced by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and State Secretary Florian Tursky (both ÖVP), who is responsible for digitization. The digital driver’s license is Austria’s first digital ID.

“The more than 115,000 activated digital driver’s licenses in the eID platform show us that digitization is also accepted in Austria,” said Tursky with satisfaction. And Karner described the police as pioneers in Europe when it comes to digitization. “The digital driver’s license is checked with a separate police app – and speeders and traffic hooligans who endanger others are also taken away digitally.”

The digital driving license is currently only recognized in Austria. However, it is based on the eIDAS regulation of the European Union and should therefore be recognized throughout the EU in the future. Discussions are currently being held with the Chamber of Commerce and ticket providers so that the first digital ID card can increasingly be used as proof of age, for example for young people in clubs. Subsequently, work is being done on the digital registration certificate and the integration of the climate ticket and the eCard, which are to follow the eID platform.
