Mourning in the Salzburg Zoo for the snow leopard Mira

“In the end, she literally lost her strength,” says Sabine Grebner, Managing Director of Zoo Salzburg. According to the WWF, the life expectancy of these big cats in the wild is around twelve years. “Due to her age, Mira was in a very poor general condition.” For several weeks, the snow leopard lady had been struggling with health problems. Her condition has deteriorated rapidly over the past few days. She was redeemed on Thursday.

“We will miss Mira. The amazing thing about her was that she could change her mood incredibly quickly. But that’s exactly what made her special,” says district manager Sebastian Zobler. Overall, she was a very sociable cat. She was attentive right to the end and enthusiastic about her favorite treats.

On May 23, 2002, the snow leopard was born in Sweden at the Nordens Ark zoo (“Ark of the North”). The snow leopard has lived in Salzburg Zoo since December 2003. Mira’s first weeks of life were documented by a television team, and the resulting film gave valuable insights into the life of the shy and rare cat species.
