In the summer of 2023, the Mona Lisa Tunnel will be a restricted area, as has been reported several times. The reason is the necessary general renovation, massive traffic jams and traffic chaos are feared.
The city of Linz announced today, Friday, that the financing plan for the project is in place. “Despite increased construction costs, a tense economic situation and a difficult bidding situation, we were able to stay within budget. On the part of the city of Linz, nothing stands in the way of the renovation of the Mona Lisa tunnel as soon as the state gives the green light,” says finance officer Deputy Mayor Tina Blöchl (SP).
Promise from the country is still missing
As is well known, according to the municipal council decision in May, a budget of 9.8 million euros applies. The state has announced that it will assume a third of the project costs, but the final commitment is still missing, says Blöchl.
The current cost plan also includes a buffer of 600,000 euros in order to be prepared for any further increases in price. It is difficult to estimate how the situation will develop in the coming months, for example with regard to raw material prices, since the current high level of inflation was not foreseeable a year ago.
Nevertheless, one is in good spirits and happy about the result of the negotiations, says Blöchl in conclusion. In principle, the financing plan now available no longer has to be submitted to a municipal committee for approval – this would only be necessary if the agreed cost framework could actually not be met due to further inflation.
