Continuity and a breath of fresh air at Schlägl Abbey

Continuity and a breath of fresh air at Schlägl Abbey

At this year’s bock beer tapping, we not only looked back, but also into the future. Because in the pen there are some changes. With Wolfgang Dobretzberger, an experienced business economist has taken over the management of the worldly affairs of the monastery. As economic director, he wants to continue working in the spirit of his predecessor Markus Rubasch. He still works as a treasurer, but after 35 years in which he had a significant influence on the operations of the canons, he wants to step down a bit.

Sustainable Energy

Schlägl Abbey has been supplied with green electricity for decades by its own hydropower. Local heating from a biomass heating plant has been used since 1990. A 100 kWp photovoltaic system is currently being installed on the roof of the brewery. The modernization of the systems always serves to save energy. After almost 50 years, the brewhouse of the brewery has had its day. That’s why they are currently planning a new one that is also more energy-efficient. Factors such as heat recovery when boiling the wort, cooking systems with low energy consumption and optimal insulation of pipes and vessels play a major role.

On the beer market, however, not only continuity but also a modern brand image counts. Therefore, a new label line for the standard range of “home beers” was developed in the Schlägl monastery brewery. Chamberlain Markus Rubasch: “The names of the beers tell stories. We have beers with personality, each one has its own character. But we also want to convey the values of the monastery and the knowledge of our raw materials.” In addition to the regular range, there are also constantly new developments in creative beers. Very up to date: “the carefree”, a non-alcoholic beer. The range is rounded off with abbey beers, based on recipes from the abbey archives.

The strong beer season was heralded with the tapping of the double bock. This is now available wherever Schlägl beer is otherwise available.
