The clever hood: not too hot, not too cold and without plastic

The clever hood: not too hot, not too cold and without plastic

The idea was born three years ago, it took two years to work on it – and this winter it’s ready to go: the new Strive collection from Eisbär. These are hoods, headbands and scarves – all of them sustainable and even made in Austria.

“Functional clothing in particular is always associated with plastic, we wanted to go a new way and produce completely plastic-free and from renewable raw materials,” says Ronald Mühlböck, Managing Director of the company based in Feldkirchen an der Donau. “But of course the requirements that the athletes place on our hoods should also be met – i.e. perfect temperature and moisture management,” explains Mühlböck.

Perfect for athletes

“That the sweat is wicked away at about the right pace and that it doesn’t get too hot or too cold on the head overall.” Because all of this has a negative effect on performance, but of course also on well-being in general. The Strive line was developed by Eisbär in cooperation with a sports institute in Switzerland and experts from the University of Salzburg. “We looked at countless materials, in the end we used three: merino wool, a special cotton and cellulose,” explains Mühlböck. The team also managed to take the different zones on the head into account when designing the hoods and headbands. “That makes sense, because you sweat more on your forehead than on the top of your head, for example.”

In general, there are products for three different temperature zones or weather conditions: for very cold days as well as lighter versions, “for people who are particularly hot,” says Mühlböck. The parts are not cheap: the price for such an “intelligent hood” starts at 60 euros.
