Army cookbook: How do I cook in times of crisis?

More and more people are becoming aware of the danger of a large-scale power failure. It may take some time for such a blackout to be resolved, according to Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) on Sunday. That is why the army is preparing to help the population in such an emergency. Together with apprentices and teaching chefs, Tanner presented the army’s “Blackout Cookbook”.

This cookbook was developed by the teaching and test kitchen at the Army Logistics School and contains simple recipes for times of crisis. Tanner: “With the cookbook, the army is showing once again in the field of military logistics that our knowledge helps the population to master crisis situations.” The preparation of food is essential for survival and especially in exceptional situations you can preserve a piece of everyday life. It is particularly important that as many households as possible have made provisions for such a crisis.

And a crucial part of this precaution is: How can I cook in an apartment without electricity? How do I prepare the food in my fridge before it spoils?

Drinking water, emergency cooking area, simple recipes

In addition to tips on storing drinking water and setting up an emergency cooking area, the book uses a handful of recipes to show how perishable food can be prepared quickly and easily. As an alternative to the electric stove, a spirit cooker, a grill (outdoors only) or a fondue pot can be used. If you don’t have a fondue set to hand: A few bricks or flowerpots of the same height are enough for a stable base. Fuel paste in the middle on a fireproof, heat-resistant surface (e.g. an old ceramic tile) make the grating
put the stove on the bricks or flower pots and the emergency cooking area is ready, as you can read in the cookbook.

From bread soup to Schmarrn

Ready-made products that can be prepared with little water in a pan (according to the cookbook, pan-fried dishes are available in every supermarket) and that have a longer shelf life are particularly well suited to preventing blackouts. There are recipes for bread soup, spicy egg dishes, potato dishes, flatbread and even sweet Schmarrn.

These basic recipes were developed and tested by the teaching and test kitchen at the Institute for Economic Services. Depending on the food available, these can be creatively modified and provide varied highlights in difficult times, says the cookbook of the Austrian Armed Forces.
