Another attack hit the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant and the UN demanded “to stop this madness”

Hours later, Grossi told French television BFMTV that the Zaporizhia plant had been the target of “a good dozen attacks”, in his opinion “absolutely deliberate and targeted”, although he declined to attribute responsibility to Russian or Ukrainian troops.

The diplomat was outraged by the fact that some “consider that a nuclear power plant is a legitimate military objective” and considered that the attacks constitute an “extremely serious” situation.

“The plant is on the front line, there are military activities that are very difficult to identify, there are Russian and Ukrainian troops operating; this madness has to be stopped,” he added.

Grossi said several times that military hostilities between Russia and Ukraine around the Zaporizhia power plant could cause a radioactive leak leading to a “nuclear disaster” of “potentially catastrophic consequences.”

The Russian military took control of the huge nuclear power plant complex – which is the largest in all of Europe – last March, after having invaded Ukraine in late February.

Since July, Russia has denounced that the Ukrainian forces have bombarded the plant. Ukraine always responded that it is the Russian forces that are attacking the plant that they control.

Russia was the first to denounce the most recent bombings yesterday, and said that, despite them, the level of radiation remained normal.

In a statement, the Russian military claimed that Ukrainian forces fired more than 20 “large-caliber projectiles” at the plant, located in the Zaporizhia province of Ukraine. The shells exploded between power blocks number 4 and 5 and hit the roof of a “special building” located near these blocks, the note added.

Despite the bombardments, “the level of radiation in the area of the plant continues to be in accordance with the norm,” the statement continued.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian nuclear agency Energoatom blamed Russia for the attacks. “This morning of November 20, 2022, as a result of numerous Russian shelling, at least 12 hits were recorded against the territory of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant,” Energoatom said in a statement.

The body accused Russia of “endangering the whole world once again.”
