Climate activists stuck to Linzer Hauptstrasse

Linz-Urfahr, eight in the morning: Nothing is moving anymore. Traffic jams in the morning are not unusual in the state capital. The reason for the delay this Monday is not the usual traffic congestion. 15 climate activists of the “last generation” have gathered in the main street, directly in front of the Hinsenkampplatz, for a spontaneous protest action. Five of them right on the roadway. Because they are “bitterly disappointed” with the results of the world climate conference.

Motorists alert the police with an emergency call. “We were able to accompany two of the activists off the road so that at least the traffic was flowing again. It took a little longer for three of them,” says operations manager Michael Hubmann. The police had to solve the problem in the truest sense of the word – because three activists had each glued themselves to the street with one hand using super glue. “We use a kind of solvent, otherwise the people could possibly get injured,” says Hubmann.

Notices under the Assembly Act

After almost 50 minutes, the police were able to declare the operation over and the activists left peacefully. Motorists had to reckon with a delay of 20 minutes, the traffic jam reached as far as the Donaulände. For the Linz police, it was the third such operation this year. “The activists will be reported under the assembly law. Administrative violations will also be checked,” says Hubmann. You cannot counteract these actions preventively. “They haven’t been announced, we have to make sure we’re there quickly.”

“We have tried everything”

“Is it really necessary for people to stick to the street so that our right to survive is finally taken seriously? We tried everything else and it didn’t work,” Jacob Ranftl, a member of the “Last Generation” defended the campaign and demanded Climate Protection Act.

“A speed of 100 on the Autobahn costs nothing and saves us 180 million liters of fuel and 460,000 tons of CO2 every year,” his colleague Jelena Saf criticized the federal government’s hesitation in taking climate action.
