Shortly after midnight, the farmer was woken from his sleep because, according to the police, he had heard “creaking noises”. Eventually he discovered that his farm building, which is next to the residential building, had caught fire. He called 911 and brought his family to safety. Numerous fire brigades from the Lienz district moved in, and a total of 286 firefighters, rescue workers and police officers were deployed. The fire was prevented from spreading to the residential building. There were still calves under a concrete barn that could be rescued by the fire brigade. Some of the chickens fled from the flames into the open. Most of the animals died, however, it said. No people were hurt.
The fire was under control at around 2.45 a.m. In the morning numerous embers were still being fought. Nothing was known about the cause of the fire.
