Plagiarism allegations against new Netflix series

“Unfortunately, we don’t know the artist. Not her work or her comic either,” posted “1899” director Baran bo Odar on his Instagram appearance. “We would never steal from other artists as we see ourselves as artists. We have been in contact with her and hope she retracts these allegations.”

The Internet has become a strange place, said the director. Comic author Mary Cagnin complained on social media a few days ago that the German series “is simply identical to my comic ‘Black Silence’, which was published in 2016”. She cited several plot elements in “1899”, including a black pyramid. Many users had then commented critically on social networks about the Netflix project. Other users had declared their solidarity with the “1899” authors.

The new series by “Dark” makers Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar went online on November 17th. In eight episodes, “1899” tells of the mysterious events that took place during the voyage of the “Kerberos” from London to New York towards the end of the 19th century.
