Concrete from solar energy with the expertise of Linz AG

Linz AG created a concept with solar panels on the facade for the factory tower, which was in need of renovation. These can generate twice the energy consumption of concrete production, the excess electricity is fed into the grid. This should cover the project costs in the long term.

The project was a big challenge, said Bernd Freisais from Linz-Energieservice, the Linz AG subsidiary responsible for the project. Thanks to technical progress, photovoltaic panels for vertical surfaces have only recently become sufficiently efficient for economic use.

The panels and also the technology in the background come from Austrian companies. “It has therefore been possible to generate the greatest possible regional added value,” said Freiseis at the project presentation.

Martini Beton invested around 600,000 euros in the façade, and the state funded the project. Energie AG takes over the maintenance of the system, and a monitoring system was installed for this purpose.

The photovoltaic system is a showcase project for the good cooperation between electricity providers and companies, said Energy and Economic Councilor Markus Achleitner (VP). “In addition, we managed to use a built-up area for electricity generation and not to seal any further areas in accordance with the state’s strategy.”
