The Austria-wide project “Hospice and Palliative Care in Nursing Homes” (HPCPH) has set itself the goal of accompanying people in retirement homes as best as possible through the last phase of life. Upper Austria’s first HPCPH location is Haus Barbara, the old people’s and nursing home run by the Franciscan nuns in Ottnang. There will be two palliative care rooms there from January. It is intended for people who were previously cared for in the palliative care ward of the Salzkammergut Clinic in Vöcklabruck.
“We are there for our residents in every situation, even at the end of their lives when it’s time to leave,” says Astrid Rosner, the manager of Haus Barbara. “It is very important to me that people who are about to die are accompanied, looked after and cared for in a holistic way, physically, psychologically, socially and spiritually.” The nursing team in Ottnang was not only specifically trained for this. It also works closely with the palliative care unit in Vöcklabruck, the regional hospice association and the Salzkammergut mobile palliative care team. “We want to enable people to live a dignified, individually tailored final phase of their lives,” says Johann Stroblmair, managing director of the six old people’s and nursing homes run by the Franciscan nuns of Vöcklabruck.
