The power to schedule such a vote is reserved for the UK Parliament, Supreme Court President Robert Reed said in London. Therefore, “the Scottish Parliament does not have the authority to decide on a referendum on Scottish independence”.
Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon wanted to hold a referendum on this in October 2023. However, the British central government rejects a renewed independence referendum and refuses to give its approval. Now the court decided in the sense of London – Sturgeon was “disappointed” in a first reaction.
The Scots had already voted in 2014 to leave the kingdom that had been shared with England and Wales for three centuries. At that time, the opponents of independence prevailed with 55 to 45 percent of the votes.
Sturgeon justified the desire for a new vote with the outcome of the Brexit referendum in 2016: A clear majority of Scots voted against Great Britain’s exit from the EU, which has since taken place. Sturgeon wants to bring an independent Scotland back into the European Union.
