A hacker group close to the Kremlin claimed responsibility for the attack, said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. “Our IT experts are fighting back and protecting our systems,” she wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. She also stressed that Parliament had recently designated Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Due to numerous hits, the Parliament’s website can only be used to a limited extent on Wednesday, as press officer Jaume Duch had previously announced. The accesses are related to a so-called DDos attack. In DDoS attacks, attackers overwhelm their victims’ servers with a flood of data requests in order to paralyze them.
A few hours earlier, the European Parliament passed a resolution condemning Russia as a terrorism supporter. It is not yet clear whether the attack is related to the resolution. However, there are repeated attacks by hacker groups from Russia on authorities in Western countries.
