BMW collided with a regional train in the Innviertel

A slightly drunk man from the Innviertel got behind the wheel of his BMW around nine o’clock on Wednesday. The 35-year-old from the Braunau district had 0.32 per mil alcohol in his blood when he drove into an unrestricted level crossing near the KTM plant in Schalchen (Braunau am Inn district), but secured with a stop sign and St. Andrew’s Cross.

The driver noticed the approaching regional train too late: Despite emergency braking, the BMW slipped onto the railway tracks, was hit by the Mattigtalbahn railcar and then thrown back onto the road.

The train came to a standstill 60 meters after the collision. The driver was unharmed in the traffic accident, as were the train driver and around 15 passengers, the police said on Wednesday afternoon. The Mattighofen, Schalchen and Stallhofen fire brigades arrived for the clean-up work.
