ÖVP accepts “temporary car lock”

The ÖVP, which has so far spoken out in favor of retaining the meeting zone (accessible for cars) on the town square, could imagine a temporary car block in the upper half of the town square “as a compromise”. “But only in summer and from 3 p.m. to midnight,” says Deputy Mayor Elisabeth Kölblinger (ÖVP). She had previously suggested turning the upper back town (Neudorfer bookshop) into a pedestrian zone.

Kölblinger advocates taking the interests of inner-city merchants into account. “If we radically ban car traffic from the city center, that would be fatal for many companies,” she says.

Kölblinger still rejects the referendum proposed by Mayor Peter Schobesberger (SPÖ). “We were asked by the voters to make decisions,” says Kölblinger. “Even if it’s an uncomfortable topic.”
