A rather cool September was followed by the warmest October since records began. On the mountains, October was even warmer than September, which was very rare in previous decades. November was also far too mild and will be among the 20 warmest November months since measurements began. According to Alexander Orlik from ZAMG, taking into account the forecast up to the end of November, this autumn is the fifth warmest autumn in the history of measurements in the Austrian lowlands and the eleventh warmest in the mountains. Compared to the average for the years 1991 to 2020, the temperature in the lowlands has risen by one degree Celsius and in the mountains by as much as 1.2 degrees.
At minus ten percent, the amount of precipitation in autumn 2022 was still in the long-term average across Austria, but there were clear regional differences. In the south and east of Austria it was relatively dry with minus 15 to minus 60 percent, in the north and west on the other hand it was rather humid with plus 15 to 45 percent. The sun conditions, on the other hand, largely corresponded to the average in almost all of Austria. Autumn sunshine hours fell slightly by five percent compared to the long-term average, despite very sunny October and November. This was due to the above-average cloudy September, which brought a quarter fewer hours of sunshine than usual.
