How a ceramic tile gets a second life

In order to counteract this problem, the Leitl brick factory has applied for a patent for masonry that can be dismantled non-destructively. By using a specially developed adhesive and a separating layer, individual bricks are connected and provided with a washable plaster. “This separable composite system allows bricks to be installed again,” says Managing Director Stefan Leitl. “The idea behind this is that ceramic bricks have an almost unlimited lifespan.”

The CO2 emissions generated during production would thus be spread over a very long period of time and even completely avoided if reused.

A first pilot test was already promising. Safety and load-bearing capacity are currently being evaluated together with the Bautechnisches Institut. Leitl intends to launch the product on the market as early as next year.
