Bad weather and strong winds made the rescue work difficult. So far, a 31-year-old Italian woman has been found dead, and her partner is still being sought, according to the authorities. 13 people were injured in the landslide. 130 homeless people had to spend the night in hotels on the island.
The storm hit the island of just over 60,000 people early on Saturday. The coastal town of Casamicciola in the north was particularly affected. Masses of mud damaged houses, where some of the missing people were suspected. According to the fire brigade, two people were rescued from a car that was torn into the sea. It was deployed with a total of 100 forces and 40 vehicles. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sent soldiers to the island to support rescue workers.
Ischia Mayor Enzo Ferrandino complained that some families did not want to leave their homes. This could be dangerous. A dozen people who remain locked in their homes without water and electricity have not yet been reached.
Italy is being hit more and more frequently by severe landslides. In September, 13 people died in storms in the Adriatic region of Marche. There has been a severe weather alarm in southern Italy since Friday. Flooding was reported in Venice, and the lagoon city is protected from the floods by a system of dam barriers.
