Right-wing extremists threw hate letters into the air in front of the refugee shelter

According to the Ministry of the Interior, it was the Identitarian successor “The Austrians”. Ten people between the ages of 18 and 34 were stopped and reported. They come from Lower and Upper Austria, Carinthia and Vienna. Among them was the head of the identities, Martin Sellner, as the APA learned from well-informed circles. About 20 people, dressed in paramilitary uniforms and with masked faces, lit Bengali fires in front of the main entrance of the care center, dragged a model of a barricade made of wire and scattered hate letters with slogans of the so-called New Right such as “population exchange”.

Before the police arrived, the members of the organization had probably fled in a rental car. In the course of the search, a patrol from the standby unit (BE) became aware of the vehicle, and the driver evaded being stopped several times. When the car was finally stopped, there were three people in the driver’s area and three more in the loading area. Four other alleged members were stopped in Traiskirchen by officers from the local police inspection.

Renaming after donation of a terrorist

The far-right Identitarians gave themselves a new name and new symbols after a donation to Identitarian leader Martin Sellner by the New Zealand shooter who murdered 51 people was revealed. The group was subsequently banned. “In their ideology, the abbreviation DOE5 is often used – based on the Austrian resistance group that fought in Vienna against the inhuman Nazi regime,” said the Lower Austrian police.

The symbols of the group “the Austrians” were already banned in the Symbols Act in July 2021 on the initiative of the federal government.

Karner: “Understanding for worries”

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) stated in connection with the incident that he had “great understanding for people’s fears and concerns in connection with the smuggling mafia and illegal migration”. “But against those people who try to bring their slogans and their hatred into our society or to prepare the political breeding ground for them, we will use all means of the democratic constitutional state to take action,” emphasized the department head.
