Corona: Masks will be compulsory in Vienna’s public transport throughout the winter

As Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) explained, the obligation to wear a mask on public transport – and the regulations in the health and care sector – will probably continue to exist throughout the winter. “It makes sense to maintain certain measures in the colder season,” he said in an interview with APA.

The situation in the hospitals is still very demanding, he pointed out. You have to pay attention to vulnerable groups – for example in hospitals or care facilities. PCR tests and an obligation to wear FFP2 for visitors are still required there. People who have tested positive for the corona virus are not allowed in. There will still only be a limited number of visitors in the hospitals.

The FFP2 mask is also mandatory in public transport. This offers a certain protection against infection, emphasized Ludwig – who praised the Viennese in this regard: “I often use public transport and I have to say that the discipline is still very high, contrary to what is claimed.”

He assumes that the package of measures will be extended until the end of winter. Because in the cold season, the situation is not likely to improve significantly. In any case, he will continue to consult with his team of experts, “which has guided me well through the crisis so far”.
