After the media had been speculating for months about the native Swiss saying goodbye, the Formula 1 racing team has now confirmed the 53-year-old’s retirement at the end of the year. The relevant press release reads: “Ferrari has accepted the resignation of Mattia Binotto. He is leaving his role as Ferrari team principal on December 31.”
The rumor about a separation of Binotto’s “Scuderia” was last around the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Last week, the Italian “Gazetta dello Sport” already reported the separation of the racing team and the team boss. I think it is right to take this step at this point in time, no matter how difficult the decision was for me,” said Binotto after the official announcement his resignation.
In his farewell statement, the now ex-team boss expressed his satisfaction at leaving behind a “united and growing team”. Ferrari is also “certainly a strong team that can achieve the highest goals and I wish them all the best for the future”. Binotto also looked back with satisfaction on his own time at “Scuderia”. “I am leaving the company I love and have been a part of for 28 years knowing that I gave my all to achieve the goals set.”
The search for a successor is already underway, and he should be announced in the new year.
